Russia and Pakistan Prepare Historic Direct Freight Rail Network

In a major development for Eurasian logistics, Russia and Pakistan are finalizing plans to launch their first direct freight rail service. The ambitious infrastructure initiative aims to establish bidirectional commercial shipping routes connecting Moscow with Pakistan’s key economic hubs, Faisalabad and Karachi.

Expanding Central Asian Trade Corridors

Russian Ambassador Albert Khorev revealed details of the project during an interview with the newspaper Izvestia. According to Khorev, diplomats and logistics officials from both nations are actively coordinating with regional partners to establish seamless transit agreements along the designated lines.

The proposed transit framework includes several key features:

  • Dual Trade Corridors: Direct freight links running both ways along the Moscow–Faisalabad (industrial textiles hub) and Moscow–Karachi (major port city) corridors.
  • Multilateral Expansion: Active negotiations are underway regarding the potential inclusion of Belarus into the broader rail transportation network.
  • Commercial Integration: Stakeholders are identifying and onboarding private commercial enterprises across participating transit countries to secure initial freight volumes.

Overcoming Geopolitical and Logistics Hurdles

While the agreement marks a significant milestone in South-Central Asian trade integration, the project has faced notable delays over the past year.

“The project has faced several delays due to heightened geopolitical tensions in the region during 2025 and early 2026,” Ambassador Khorev noted, referencing regional security dynamics that slowed cross-border coordination.

Despite these hurdles, negotiations have entered their final stages. Authorities are now finalizing formal operational agreements and transit regulations. While official target dates for the inaugural runs have not yet been announced, the completed network promises to significantly reduce transport times and costs for overland cargo moving between Eastern Europe and South Asia.
