Houthi Drone Near Makkah: Saudi Arabia Confirms Interception

A Houthi drone near Makkah was intercepted and destroyed south of the holy city before it could enter restricted airspace, according to Saudi Arabia’s military coalition, amid a fresh rise in regional tensions.

RIYADH — Saudi air defenses destroyed a drone south of Makkah on Tuesday evening after Saudi authorities said the aircraft was launched by Yemen’s Houthi movement and was heading toward restricted airspace surrounding Islam’s holiest city.

The Royal Saudi Air Defense intercepted the drone at about 6:50 p.m. on September 15, according to Major General Turki Al-Malki, spokesman for the Saudi-led coalition involved in Yemen. The aircraft was destroyed before entering Makkah’s prohibited airspace, he said.

The incident comes at a particularly sensitive moment. Makkah is home to the Grand Mosque and the Kaaba and receives millions of Muslim pilgrims and visitors from around the world.

Al-Malki said the drone was intercepted south of Makkah and described the incident as the second attempt by the Houthis to target the holy city.

The coalition says the previous incident occurred on July 27, 2017, when a ballistic missile was launched toward Makkah.

Saudi officials strongly condemned Tuesday’s incident. Al-Malki said the security of Islam’s two holiest mosques and the pilgrims who visit them was a “red line,” adding that the coalition would take what it considered necessary deterrent measures.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage from the intercepted drone.

Houthis deny threatening Makkah

The Houthis, however, dispute the Saudi account that they pose a threat to Makkah or other Islamic holy sites.

A Houthi military source denied that the movement threatened Makkah or other sacred sites, according to comments reported by the Houthi-run SABA news agency and cited by Reuters.

That denial is significant because the competing accounts come during a period of rapidly escalating military activity between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia had issued security alerts in several parts of the country on Tuesday, including Makkah and Jeddah, following a series of attacks linked by Saudi authorities to Iran-aligned fighters. The warnings were later lifted in several cities.

Saudi-Houthi tensions rise again

The latest interception follows renewed missile and drone attacks against Saudi targets.

In recent days, the Houthis have announced attacks on Saudi military and infrastructure targets, while fighting inside Yemen has also intensified. The group says some of its strikes have been carried out in retaliation for Saudi-led air attacks in Yemen.

The wider conflict has also taken on growing importance for international shipping.

Houthi forces have expanded their presence along parts of Yemen’s Red Sea coast overlooking the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a narrow waterway connecting the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden. The route is a major passage for international trade and energy shipments.

For Saudi Arabia, however, Tuesday’s interception carries significance beyond the broader military confrontation.

With Makkah at the center of Muslim religious life, any perceived threat to the city is likely to draw intense attention across the Islamic world. Saudi authorities have made clear that protecting the holy sites and those visiting them remains a central security priority as regional tensions continue.
