SBP New Banknote Updates: What You Need to Know

SBP new banknote updates remain an important topic for people following Pakistan’s currency system. The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has been working on a new banknote series, with the process beginning through an official art competition and the involvement of international banknote design firms.

However, it is important to distinguish between the development of a new series and the actual introduction of redesigned notes into circulation. SBP clarified in September 2024 that designs submitted through its public art competition were not the final shortlisted designs for the new banknote series.

New Currency Series Being Developed

The State Bank of Pakistan initiated the process for a new banknote series in January 2024. The objective was to develop innovative and thematic designs reflecting Pakistan’s identity, culture, environment, heritage and national symbols.

The SBP’s art competition invited local artists, designers and art students to submit concepts for the existing denominations. The competition covered seven denominations: Rs. 10, Rs. 20, Rs. 50, Rs. 100, Rs. 500, Rs. 1,000 and Rs. 5,000.

The competition was intended to generate design ideas rather than serve as the final selection process for the new currency notes.

Final Designs Are Different From Competition Entries

One of the most important SBP new banknote updates is the clarification issued by the central bank regarding the design process.

In September 2024, SBP stated that the winning designs from the art competition were selected for their artistic quality and themes. They were not the shortlisted designs for the new banknote series.

According to SBP, reputed international firms had been selected through a competitive process to prepare proposals for the actual new series. The central bank said these firms were expected to submit design proposals, after which the finalized designs would require approval from the SBP Board and the Federal Government.

Which Pakistani Currency Notes Are Currently Legal Tender?

The latest official SBP information lists several denominations as current legal tender in Pakistan.

These include:

• Rs. 20
• Rs. 50
• Rs. 75 commemorative notes
• Rs. 100
• Rs. 500
• Rs. 1,000
• Rs. 5,000

The SBP also lists two Rs. 75 commemorative banknotes associated with different national and institutional anniversaries.

Therefore, reports suggesting that ordinary Pakistani currency notes have already been completely replaced by a new series should not be confused with the ongoing development of redesigned banknotes.

Security Features of Pakistani Banknotes

Modern Pakistani banknotes contain several security features designed to help the public and financial institutions identify genuine currency.

Depending on the denomination, these features include watermarks, security threads, latent images, raised printing, tactile identification marks, anti-scan patterns and specialized printing techniques.

For example, the Rs. 100 banknote includes an enlarged portrait watermark, an electrotype watermark, a security thread and a hidden denomination image that becomes visible from different viewing angles. It also contains tactile identification features for visually impaired users.

The Rs. 500 note similarly contains security features including a watermark, security thread, latent denomination, raised tactile identification marks and anti-copy patterns.

Why Is Pakistan Introducing a New Banknote Series?

Central banks periodically redesign currency for several reasons. These can include strengthening security features, improving durability, modernizing printing technology and making notes easier to authenticate.

SBP’s own new banknote initiative highlights themes such as social and cultural identity, demographic diversity, climate change, economic development, natural landscapes, architectural heritage and national symbols.

A new series can therefore represent both a security upgrade and a visual modernization of the country’s currency.

What Happens to Existing Banknotes?

The introduction of a new banknote series does not automatically mean that every existing note becomes invalid immediately.

SBP explains that it is responsible for maintaining an adequate supply of quality banknotes across Pakistan. The central bank also collects worn and unserviceable notes from circulation and replaces them with fresh notes.

According to SBP, previous banknote series can be discontinued from legal tender status with the approval of the Federal Government.

This means the public should rely on official SBP announcements for information about any withdrawal or replacement of a particular denomination.

Are New Pakistani Notes Already in Circulation?

The development of a new banknote series should not be confused with the current notes already circulating in Pakistan.

The SBP’s official currency information continues to list the existing denominations as legal tender. The central bank has also maintained dedicated information pages explaining the security features of these notes.

As a result, images circulating online that claim to show “official new Pakistani currency notes” should be treated separately from officially issued currency unless they are confirmed by the State Bank of Pakistan.

What Could Change With the New Series?

The final series may introduce updated visual designs and modern security technologies. However, the final appearance, colors, themes and exact security features should be considered official only after the relevant approval and announcement process is completed.

The SBP has previously emphasized that the public art competition was only one part of the broader development process. The final banknote designs are subject to the official selection and approval process.

SBP New Banknote Updates: Current Status

The key point from the latest official information is that Pakistan has been developing a new banknote series, but the designs produced through the 2024 public art competition were not themselves the final designs for circulation.

For everyday transactions, the existing legal-tender denominations listed by SBP remain relevant. The central bank continues to provide information about their security features and currency management.

People should therefore distinguish between new banknote design development, official approval, printing, and actual circulation. These are separate stages of the currency replacement process.
