The Honor Magic 9 Series is getting a clearer identity ahead of its September 28 launch in China. Instead of relying on the usual flagship recipe of a faster processor and upgraded cameras, Honor is putting much of the spotlight on filmmaking, long-range photography and dedicated imaging hardware.

Recent teasers reveal everything from ARRI-assisted video features and Honor's own H1 imaging chip to unusual teleconverter accessories. Meanwhile, a Geekbench appearance has given us an early look at what may be powering the Magic9 Pro Max.

Here are seven key developments worth knowing before the official launch.

1. Honor Magic 9 Series Goes Big on ARRI Video

One of the biggest changes is Honor's collaboration with ARRI.

The Magic9 series is being prepared with professional-style video tools inspired by workflows normally associated with dedicated cinema equipment. ARRI LogC3 recording is part of the package, giving creators more flexibility when adjusting color, highlights and shadows during post-production.

Honor is also bringing ARRI Looks to the phones. These preset color profiles are meant to give footage a distinctive cinematic appearance without requiring every user to manually color-grade a clip from scratch.

For more experienced creators, features such as focus peaking and exposure-monitoring tools could make the phone considerably more useful for controlled video shoots.

This is more than simply adding a “cinematic” filter to the camera application. Honor appears to be building an entire capture-to-edit workflow around the ARRI partnership.

2. Honor's H1 Chip Handles Imaging Separately

There's another piece of hardware sitting behind those camera ambitions: the Honor H1 image chip.

Honor says its self-developed imaging processor can perform lossless noise reduction on video in the RAW domain. The company claims this approach can improve the signal-to-noise ratio by 8dB.

Why does that matter?

Processing an image earlier in the pipeline can help preserve useful information before the final video is produced. In practical terms, the technology is aimed at producing cleaner footage when lighting isn't ideal, while retaining details that creators may want during editing.

The H1 therefore looks like an important part of Honor's strategy. The company isn't depending entirely on the main smartphone processor to handle its imaging workload.

3. Two Teleconverters Push the Camera Beyond the Phone

Honor is also taking a rather old-school photography idea and attaching it to a modern flagship.

The photography master kit prepared for the Magic9 series includes a 200mm Honor Thumb Teleconverter and a much more ambitious 500mm Honor Mega Teleconverter.

That's an interesting direction.

Smartphone brands usually chase extreme zoom through periscope hardware, computational photography and digital cropping. Honor's accessory approach gives photographers another tool when they need significantly more reach.

Real-world image quality will still need independent testing. A huge equivalent focal length sounds impressive on paper, but stabilization, atmospheric conditions, available light and processing can all affect the final result.

Still, a 500mm teleconverter certainly makes the Magic9 camera system stand out.

4. Magic9 Pro Max Gets a Tougher Black Diamond Display

The Magic9 Pro Max is also receiving attention outside the camera department.

Honor calls its panel the Ultimate Black Diamond Screen and is making some sizeable durability claims. According to the company's teasers, display reflectivity has been reduced to 1.5%.

Honor also claims the panel offers 25 times greater drop resistance and 15 times greater scratch resistance, along with 5,600 layers of high-precision silicon nitride coating.

Those are manufacturer claims, so independent durability tests will ultimately tell us how meaningful the improvements are in everyday use.

Reduced reflectivity, however, could be particularly useful on a camera-focused phone. A screen that's easier to see outdoors can make framing shots and monitoring video less frustrating in bright conditions.

5. New Qinghai Lake Battery Tech Focuses on Energy Density

Battery technology is another area where Honor is trying something different.

The company has teased a new-generation Qinghai Lake battery using 40% silicon content. Honor is also highlighting high energy density, including a claimed 1,000Wh/L-class figure for the Magic9 Pro Max.

Higher energy density allows manufacturers to fit more battery capacity into a limited amount of internal space, which is becoming increasingly important as flagship camera modules and cooling systems grow larger.

Reports surrounding the lineup have also pointed to an enormous battery for the Magic9 Super Edition. The exact capacities and charging specifications across every model, however, are best treated as incomplete until Honor publishes the final specification sheets at launch.

6. Magic9 Pro Max Appears With 16GB RAM

While Honor has been teasing the cameras, an apparent Honor Magic9 Pro Max has surfaced in the Geekbench database.

The device carries model number WKL-AN20 and was tested with 16GB of RAM while running Android 17.

The listing identifies the Qualcomm platform using the SM8975 designation. Reports have associated that identifier with the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro, although the commercial chipset name and exact variant shouldn't be considered officially settled based on a benchmark entry alone.

The prototype recorded 3,448 points in single-core and 9,353 points in multi-core testing on Geekbench 6.7.1.

There is an important catch here: this appears to be pre-release hardware.

Benchmark scores can change as firmware, thermal management and software optimization are finalized. Results produced using different Geekbench versions shouldn't be directly compared either.

In other words, the listing is useful for getting an early look under the hood, but it isn't the final performance verdict.

7. Honor Is Building a Camera System, Not Just a Camera Phone

Put all these announcements together and Honor's direction becomes more interesting.

The Magic9 series isn't being marketed around one giant camera sensor alone. Honor is combining its H1 imaging processor, ARRI color science and video workflow, physical teleconverters, computational processing and dedicated camera accessories.

There's even a YOYO One-Click Notes feature designed to capture audio and video highlights, work with subtitles and turn video content into Live-style media.

That broader ecosystem may end up being more important than any single megapixel figure.

A smartphone can have excellent camera hardware and still feel limited if recording, monitoring, editing and accessory support don't work together. Honor appears to be trying to connect those pieces.

What We Still Don't Know

There are still a few blanks that only the official launch can properly fill.

Final pricing is one of them. Regional availability is another. We also need complete specifications for each Magic9 model rather than features shared across teasers, leaks and prototype benchmark results.

Most importantly, camera samples released by a manufacturer can't replace independent testing.

ARRI LogC3, dedicated RAW-domain processing and a 500mm teleconverter make for an impressive specification sheet, but their real value will depend on stabilization, autofocus, heat management, recording limits and actual image quality.

Honor Magic 9 Series Launch Is Set for September 28

Honor has scheduled the Magic9 series launch for September 28, 2026, in China.

By then, we should have a much clearer picture of which features belong to each model, along with final memory options, battery capacities, charging specifications and pricing.

For now, one thing is already apparent: Honor isn't treating photography as a side feature of the Magic9 generation. From ARRI-assisted video to dedicated imaging silicon and physical telephoto accessories, the company is making cameras central to the identity of its next flagship family.

And with the Magic9 Pro Max already showing up in benchmark testing, there shouldn't be too long to wait before the remaining pieces fall into place.
